Genesis Energy is proud to be a part of the Huntly Community
Huntly Power Station rests along the bank of the Waikato River and provides approximately 20% of New Zealand’s electricity. Huntly Power Station consists of three separate generating plants, the original 1000MW coal and gas-fired steam plant, a 50MW open cycle gas turbine generator and Huntly e3p, a 385 MW combined cycle gas turbine plant.
Genesis Energy is involved with Huntly’s community through the following activities:
Genesis Energy Huntly Aquatic Centre
The Huntly community has a heated pool to enjoy and more time to enjoy it in due to extended opening hours. The Genesis Energy Huntly Aquatic Centre officially opened on 17 December 2004. The project consisted of upgrading the existing 25-metre pool, the six-metre learners relaxation pool, the children’s pool and refurbishment of the existing grandstand. LOCATION -White Street Huntly (By Lake Hakanoa)
Curtain Bank
The Curtain Bank is a community partnership between Genesis Energy and HEET (Huntly Energy Efficiency Trust). HEET collects donations of good quality used curtains and reline, resize and distribute them to families in need. Approximately 12% of all warmth in the home is lost through windows and doors so it’s important to create a ‘cosy-zone’ to keep houses warm. This can increase health benefits for families and save families money by reducing the amount needed to spend on heating.
In 2006, the Curtain Bank helped over 60 families with creating a ‘cosy-zone’ in their home with curtains. If you would like to donate curtains that you no longer need, please phone HEET on 07) 828 8004 for more information.
Books in Homes
Genesis Energy sponsors Huntly West Primary School and Huntly Primary School with the Books in Homes programme. The programme supports literacy in children by ensuring each student receives 2 – 4 books each year to take home and keep. The Duffy Foundation organises special guests to come to assemblies to give out the books.
Huntly i – SITE Information Centre
For a number of years, Genesis Energy has sponsored the Huntly i-SITE Information Centre, operated by Waikato Enterprise Agency and supported by Waikato District council. The i-SITE Information Centre also hosts a large Genesis Energy display with information and brochures on the Huntly Power Station and other generation assets.
Lake Hakanoa Walkway
Genesis Energy was approached in 2005 to assist in upgrading the walkway around Lake Hakanoa, which has become one of the ‘must-sees’ in Huntly. The Genesis Energy Gardens are currently under construction with completion scheduled for early 2007.
