Take a walk around the historic and stunning Lake Hakanoa. Dedicated Huntly locals supported by the Waikato District Council and key funders have transformed this wilderness into Huntly’s most sought-after attraction.
Walking at a steady pace it should take you around 45 minutes to walk around the 3.62 Km that circles the entire Lake Hakanoa. The walkway is split into 13 different zones, each with its own separate and different identity.
The entrance to The Lake Hakanoa Walkway is in the Huntly Domain, at the end of Park Avenue.

Time: 1.5 hours
What was once the Weavers Opencast Mine is now Lake Puketrini, a pristine lake for sailing, boating, and swimming. The lake provides tracks for walking, cross country, off-road running, and mountain biking, along with rest points and viewing spots with glimpses of the lake.
There is also a large diving platform for deep diving training and a boat ramp and two jetties for boating and sailing.
The walking track around Lake Puketrini will take you 1.15 hours at a steady pace. Lake Puketrini is located 400 meters to the west of the Tainui Bridge on Rotowaro Road.
Accessed from Parker Road, Raahui Pookeka Huntly is home to the northern sections of the Hakarimata Ranges, offering a variety of trails that cater to different fitness levels. 1.5 km to the Kauri Grove; 2 km to the lookout
Time: 2 hr for the full loop
40 min to the Kauri Grove, 1 hr to the lookout.
The journey begins at the Parker Road car park, where a series of steps lead you to the loop walk junction. Taking a right turn, you’ll traverse through vibrant native bush, passing an old pā site hidden among the foliage. Continue to a majestic kauri tree, a true giant of the Waikato, standing for over a millennium.
The path continues through a grove of young kauri, known as ‘rickers’, before reaching a scenic viewpoint. From here, the trail ascends steeply to another junction. The right path offers breathtaking views of Huntly and the north Waikato lakes, while the left path descends past nīkau palms to a lower lookout.
Complete the loop by returning to the initial junction and descending the steps back to the car park.
Length: 3.7 km from Parker Road to the Southern Lookout.
Time: 2 hr 20 min.
Starting from Parker Road, follow the Kauri Loop Track to the top viewpoint. From there, a tramping track heads south to the Southern Lookout.
The Southern Lookout provides expansive views over Hamilton and, on clear days, all the way to Tongariro National Park.
Length: 6 km from Parker Road to the summit.
Time: 4 hr 30 min.
Begin your hike at Parker Road and follow the Kauri Loop Track to the top viewing point. From there, continue on the track to the summit, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.
The trail is a mix of undulating terrain with exposed tree roots and rough patches, winding through the mature native forest.
At the summit, you have the option to exit the walkway down to Brownlee Avenue (1 hr) or continue along the Rail Trail to Waingaro Road (another 2 hr 30 min). Ensure you have transport arranged for the end of the walkway.
